Here’s a bench I made out of Cypress this week. It was my first time trying a wedged mortise and tenon. Not perfect but not terrible

Hopefully this doesn’t come off as condescending, because I am genuinely curious: if you were to do this again, would you cut the wedges shorter before inserting them? At that length, I would be worried about them breaking if you tried to hammer them in.

Meat_Legs

Yeah I made a note of that on that picture actually. It was pure laziness. I should’ve cut them shorter

TheJuBe

Oh, my bad! Sorry I missed that. Good work though!

azzy989

It looks great, what tools did you use for this? I am new to woodwork and want to learn!

Meat_Legs

I made the wedges on a bandsaw and I cut the slots for the wedges with just a hand saw. Easy peazy, but without a bandsaw I’d have been a bit afraid to cut them

noahisaac

Really impressive. Precise. Clean. Graceful. The wedged tenons look great to me. Never done any of those myself, but I can’t really imagine them being any cleaner.

Meat_Legs

Thank you so much, they’re only 6” off the ground so no one will see the small imperfections 😁

_satanick

Nice work! Ive been wanting to incorporate that into a furniture piece

Meat_Legs

Do it! It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.

DaRudeabides

Really cool elegant looking piece.

Meat_Legs

Thank you!

hewescrab

I love this - great work! I love cypress trees and cypress wood but you don't see much furniture made from it.

Meat_Legs

Yeah I like it too, and I think I’ll be using it in more projects in the future for sure. Smells nice too!

tamukaisbad

I like how subtle it a lot of ways. The joinery is straight up perfection! Amazing work man!

Meat_Legs

Thank you so much!

da_vetz

Usually when I make a piece of furniture I'm not satisfied with a bunch of stuff. I keep forgetting that people don't go around with a microscope and analyze every joint I make (I make all kinds of joints). Tipically everyone else seems to like the results. I'm still not satisfied and I guess that's the kind of mentality you need to keep improving your work. The bench is beautiful, elegant and the tasteful amount of contrast from the wedges makes everything look like a pro job.

Meat_Legs

I know what you mean. It really bugs me when it’s not perfect, but I take it as a learning opportunity and try to think about what I’d do better next time. Improving is part of the satisfaction of the hobby for me. Good thing I’ve got a long way to go lol

Meat_Legs

And thank you for the compliments, I really appreciate it.

Noname1106

Looks very good. Has an Asian feel to it. Looks good.

Jackshao27

How is the top fixed?

Meat_Legs

Figure 8 fasteners

bullfrog48

it was asked once .. no reply .. love this super clean design .. But ... HOW is the top attached?

Meat_Legs

Figure 8 fasteners

bullfrog48

awesome, thanks

rakerybakery

Awesome work! Reminds me of Borat

Meat_Legs

Borat?

OZeski

I think he means “very nice”. Did you work off of plans?

Meat_Legs

Ahh right right. Yeah I drew up some plans for it based on some pictures of benches I liked. I don’t know how to use anything other than Adobe illustrator but that actually works pretty well
