One of the more underrated showa era Kaiju films imo, as for Rodan himself, I love his design as a irradiatedĀ pteranodon and fitting with Godzilla where they both look like animals from the cretaceous period. Also like the small eyes making him look more menacing than most of the Kaiju from this era and just having the ability to fly at fast speeds gave him a unique presence and innovation to the city destruction.
The Rodan standalone movie is one of my favorites. It's a classic example of a '50s giant monster movie, it has every element done very well, from the stock footage of nukes at the beginning to the speech about maybe the monster was a victim all along at the end when they both die in the volcano. It's remarkably well done for the time, still holds up pretty well, and the bait and switch monster at the beginning which turns out to just be snack food for the main event probably caught a ton of people by surprise in the theaters back then.
As for Rodan himself, he's one of my favorite designs. I love the mix of puppetry and the classic guy in a suit - he also doesn't just look like a dinosaur, which is nice. He's got neat little devil horns, that collection of spikes all over an armored stomach, the wings are awesome, etc. He just looks dangerous.
A simple design but really effective. As someone else mentioned, he's got little, beady black eyes which do make him look a bit more sinister than other monsters of his era, and that keeps him from looking overly goofy in retrospect.
On a side note, I always considered him Godzilla's right hand man. I know a lot of people put Anguirus there instead, but in my mind Rodan is such a design departure from Godzilla and has just as many movies where he fights alongside him that I like him in that role a bit more.
This was the best version of Rodan. Interesting story and cool design. And he wasn't punching bag for toho kaijus and the filmmakers themselves. Very underrated.
I think he looks a little bit goofy, but I like it, I havent seen the movie so I don't know much about what happens, but I know his wind breath is cool

Love Rodan. Second only to Godzilla in my book.

Yeah I always consider Rodan Godzilla's right hand man than Anguirus
Good boy, best friend, 10 out of 10

One of the most tragic endings one Kaiju movie
Sometimes simple is better 8/10
Love this design, dunno why :p He just looks like a big bird man.
ok
The head wings looks good. The torso looks wierd with those spikes.
While his design isn't that different from a regular pterodactyl, it's cool how recognizable he is.
6/10
