I like Humayun Ahmed's novels, but a few weeks ago I got downvoted here for saying that, for some reason.

nnnerdfairyyy

I wonder why you'd get downvoted. Once upon a time, our home always had Humayun Ahmed books scattered here and there - my mother and siblings were avid readers of Himu and Misir Ali. But eh.. as I mentioned elsewhere, I never used to read much. Anyway, a couple of years ago, I went through Humayun Ahmed's "Akash Jora Megh" and it was refreshing. Wait, am I gonna be downboo'd for discussing/admiring Humayun Ahmed books too?

Minskdhaka

Hope not! 😊 No downvotes so far for either of us, so we're good this time, I think. 🙂

digitalmethbaba

Probably someone u had a beef with downvoted u and then other people follow the downvotes coz they apparently have the reddit hive mind syndrome. I also keep seeing a lot of my comments get downvoted for no reason recently. Bet this one will also get downvoted.

Astra_777

I think I am going to start Pother Pachali, but would love some more recommendations!

Iizsatan

Pother pachali is a great book to start with.

Would recommend Ahmed Sofa if you think you are matured enough for it.

Astra_777

What are his books like?

AnimalNo7484

he was a genius. best public intellectual we ever had. you can try his novels or non fictions

NiloyKesslar1997

Check out Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. His novel "Srikanto" is one of the best I have ever read. Also, check out "Kobi" by Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay.

some really good recommendations here, esp by u/Iizsatan. Would like to add the following to the list of what would be called "classics" period of Bangla literature - Chinna Patra, Shesher Kobita by Rabindranath Thakur, if you have read/will read Pother Pachali follow up with Aparajito and Apur Shongshar, Chourangi by Shongkor works by Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay and Sukumar Roy

nnnerdfairyyy

oooh you reminded me to add - OP could read some Satyajit Ray as well... especially his intruguing short stories.

rambobilai

and some Feluda!

nnnerdfairyyy

Indeed. Even if someone's not interested in Feluda/Prof.Shanku, there's always those short stories with unassuming twists. His memoirs and critiques on filmmaking are also very popular if I'm not wrong. So there's variation for OP to choose from.

WanderingWulf

I loved it so much. I never found another writer portraying the life of the middle class/lower middle class people of Bangladeshis so poignantly.

nnnerdfairyyy

The characters were so realistic, right? One was too pissed off at class difference, another so humble at acknowledging and accepting the same discrimination... I've actually forgotten their names but the story is still so relevant!
