You can ballpark the landing with physics but there's quite a few extra variables you just can't properly account for. A good bmx rider can boost the shit out of a small lip and go flying. Awesome way to get kids interested in STEM though.
I could tell he was gonna over shoot by a long shot. I’ve never jumped motorbikes, but I have put a ton of hours into bmx. That speed on a bicycle would have done well. But the force behind a motorcycle is far more. This guy clearly underestimated it.
Never liked jumping things (altho I did launch my 600 off a speed bump last night) but damn I didn’t expect it, I guess the extra throttle at the end just launched that thing into orbit.
it's so you don't nose dive. everyone learns that the first time they try to jump a dirt bike haha. that's what i'm guessing this dudes good at but he wasn't ready for whatever's different about jumping a bike like that
Are jumps calculated (ramps need to be at x angle, speed needs to be y, downward ramp needs to be z distance away), or do you depend solely on skill and instinct?
Big big jumps like what are in world record attempts are calculated. Everything else is just a feeling.
You don’t start on big jumps so as you learn you know a kicker will send you X distance at Y speed and this kind of jump will send you so far, different steepness ramps send you XYZ.
As for going to a brand new track? You just send it and hope for the best, when I rode motorcross I could turn up to a track I’d never been to before and hit 60foot jumps first lap.
>when I rode motorcross I could turn up to a track I’d never been to before and hit 60foot jumps first lap.
Much braver than I, it takes me half a day to work up to the bigger ones.
It's a pretty basic physics problem, actually. Professionals absolutely do that math; this guy clearly did not. The exit angle of the ramp is way too steep for his bike, and likely any bike. Distance is better than height because how hard the landing is all comes down to 9.8m/s^2. You want the catch ramp as close to the beginning of the downturn of your arc as possible. Basically, it starts here:
Altitude = y(t) = v0 sinθt − (1/2)gt^2; ymax is at the time t such that t = v0 sinθg
Ive never made a jump before so I would not know that portion, but you definitely learn tracks over time and do get a feel for your bike when hitting jumps. And then you also learn techniques and how to use your body when jumping.
What? Your physics make no sense. What force behind a motorcycle?
With the same speed a bicycle or a motorcycle would have behaved exactly the same. Speed alone basically matters. The only other difference is that the weight of the motorcycle will compress the springs more when hitting the ramp making the bike "jump" as the springs start bouncing back (unless rebound was adjusted).
No, the distance has nothing to do with the mass. It's all velocity. It's the same as the old experiment with a heavy ball and a light ball, both falling at the same speed. Once the bike is airborne, it travels the same distance no matter what it weighs.
Wouldn't the speed have the same effect on a bmx or a heavy bike? If anything I'd think the bmx could go further with a good pump from the rider, but they could also squash the lip or redirect more vertical. Basically the heavy motorcycle is doing what it does and you're just along for the ride.
I just don’t get it, he paced it correctly the first time. And then he was noticeably faster the second time.
Must be a nerves thing, wants to make sure he clears it.
He totally could have calculated how fast he needed to go off that ramp based on the weight of his bike and the space between the two ramps. There was some potential big brain flexing to be done here, but unfortunately it was left out.
Was talking to a firefighter who was telling me how people seemingly walk away from crazy accidents, but then die in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, after the shock and adrenaline wears off.
I couldn't believe this guy was still walking after the way his body wrecked on that landing... but I hope he's actually okay.
A few years ago a riding buddy crashed while we were out riding some twisties. He was fine except for some scrapes and bruises, but his bike was mangled so he had someone come pick him up. Riding home in the car, 90 minutes later, he lost consciousness. His friend drove him to the nearest emergency room. Turned out he ruptured his spleen in the crash. He was in the ICU for like 3 days. Internal injuries are no joke, always get checked out after a crash.
You would be surprised how many people die in car accidents but look like nothing happened to them. They usually bleed out from the inside from a torn blood vessel in the heart which is pretty much instant death.
Looks like he broke off both footrests, so hopefully a lot of the force from falling from that height went through his legs, otherwise it would have been his crotch that took his whole weight... might not have been all that bad, looked like he went about as high as a roof and most people that jump off a roof live to talk about it.
Its wild.
Another thing that blew my mind upon hearing, but thinking logically it makes sense:
When you get electrocuted, even if it doesn't kill you upon getting hit, you can feel generally fine and 2 or 3 days later you just drop dead. Thats why its advised always go to the hospital after getting electrocuted just in case so you can get your heart checked for irregular rhythm or whatever the issue is (I dont know for sure im just assuming it's a heart issue)
And this is why you should learn math/physics (or hire someone who did) before trying something this stupid.
If he'd gone the right speed, it just might've worked (assuming the landing ramp was sturdy enough, which it probably wasn't lol).
god you’re so lame. why not practice jumping tables on a motocross bike? guys that hit jumps don’t need to know paper math/physics, once you’ve got the feel for jumping you maybe walk the jump, roll it a couple times and you can see the speed you need to hit it at. you either can do this, or you do not jump motorcycles. to further this, even if he did know the number, looking down to get it and holding speed ain’t gonna be easy. holding a level speed also isn’t exactly how you want to take off, it usually ends up with a kick of the rear, you’d want to come in 3-5 mph slow and roll on off the face just as he did. high school paper physics won’t tell you that, hitting a jump a lot will. guy should’ve been a gear down and he’d be celebrating. that’s an incredibly easy double to look through to the landing ramp and see before you hit, any motocrosser on their bike would sight read it first pass
You should have a feel for it *and* do paper math when the stakes are this high. A motocross bike on a dirt ramp and a street bike on some sketchy shit you built in front of your house are definitely not even remotely comparable.
Love how you're being downvoted because none of these people have jumped bikes before... You don't fuckin paper math the shit unless you're doing evel knievel shit
As soon as I saw the bike, I knew it was going to bottom out even if it did land upright.
Almost like light-weight moto-cross dirt bikes sit on tall suspension for a reason.
Of course having seen this, I am thinking.. what if you tried to jump a Goldwing? Could be impressive in a flying elephant sort of way...
You can get a ~1-g landing in anything if you do it right, so totally possible. You can also do a ~1-g barrel roll in anything, as demonstrated by [Tex Johnston. ](https://www.military.com/video/commercial-aviation/civil-aviation/boeing-707-does-barrel-roll-1955/2935290602001)
I can't imagine the landing ramp would have stayed up with 700lbs crashing into it though. This was probably the best outcome he could have hoped for - walking away.
Well if it had gone well, 700lbs wouldn’t have *crashed* into the landing ramp, it would land gradually because the landing ramp slopes away from the direction the bike is traveling.
I agree though, this is a good outcome compared to what could have happened - crashing early into the landing ramp, or the most likely outcome may have been the same overshoot we see in the video except the injuries are more severe.
These guys did not have the skills or planning for this to go off without a hitch.
Here is your video at 0.25x speed

He should have called Mr. Daniels from 10th grade Physics class before the attempt. They could have caught up on life, and worked the numbers before the attempt. But no, he had to be a rebel and live by his words as a kid "I'll never use this later in life!".
Guess the suspension settings were a bit off.
If they weren't before they sure are now.
Suspension?
Those bits of metal that are at the end of the street now.
Ahh just a twisted fork. Give ‘er a bit of torque and she’ll be busting tailbones again in no time
So were the tire pressures /s
Had that SX suspension
Holy fuck didn’t expect that much air time.
Same here. They seriously underestimated it too 🤣
I honestly expected the bike to go through the ramp.
I think this is the real life inspiration for Hot Rod's opening scene. https://youtu.be/3EIgmj6gp1I
My name is Rod and I like to party
I'm freakin pumped, I've been drinking green tea all goddamn day!
Uh, hi. Uh, my name is Dave, and uh... I like to party.
I know for a fact that you do not like to party
That’s basically what I had in mind.
[удалено]
I knew he broke something, in my mind I had it as his back. A femur isn't as bad but still bad...
Looks like they did too 😂
They did the math! Very poorly...
The risk I took was calculated, but man, am I bad at math….
/r/theydidntdothemath
With the angle of that jump it was for suuuure going flying. That must of fucking hurt
They should have looked at [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZ0td-SCzPo) maybe lol

Omg. I didn’t notice the little boost at the end there!
I mean think he was already going too fast, but I don’t think it helped LOL
it's so you don't nose dive. everyone learns that the first time they try to jump a dirt bike haha. that's what i'm guessing this dudes good at but he wasn't ready for whatever's different about jumping a bike like that
If it makes anyone feel better the landing ramp would have collapsed anyway
My thoughts exactly. I’m surprised the ramp didn’t collapse as well.
every time this gets posted I'm surprised the launch ramp holds so steady they've even got a cooler in there lol
Rode and jumped dirt bikes. That entire ramp set up was all wrong
Are jumps calculated (ramps need to be at x angle, speed needs to be y, downward ramp needs to be z distance away), or do you depend solely on skill and instinct?

Young and dumb mostly, I didn’t break a bone until after I turned 20. Had some serious slams and just never got hurt haha

Neither did he.

That’s just a vasectomy with extra steps!
To be fair, it's the least amount of steps.
Not if you're building the ramp.
I thought you had to build one anyway? Or have I been doing vasectomies wrong all this time?
Vasectomies… Plural?
The ramp has zero steps
he couldnt speak in the end cause his balls shot up to his throat
That's what happened to Super Dave Osborne. That's why his voice was so strange
It's rare to see a Super Dave reference in the wild! Have an upvote, and thanks for the quick flashback!
Nah, that's not a vasectomy, that's an orchiectomy.
*laughs in eunuch* had to google that one, thanks for the new medical term
And that is why you need to solve for X in order to graduate high school.
He totally could have calculated how fast he needed to go off that ramp based on the weight of his bike and the space between the two ramps. There was some potential big brain flexing to be done here, but unfortunately it was left out.
Don’t need weight at all, only angle & speed. Gravity pulls all things equally. Air resistance is negligible at this scale.
Weight has nothing to do with his trajectory lmao. Go back and solve for X again.
Kevin did we reinforce the takeoff ramp? No we didn't have time Cool
I had to scroll too far to find a Hot Rod reference
The safe word will be whhiskey
aw man, the safe word did not help at all
I'm freakin pumped I've been drinking green tea all goddamn day!

That’s how the third man to walk on the moon died. Pete Conrad went for a motorcycle ride, wrecked, went to the hospital where he bled out.
You would be surprised how many people die in car accidents but look like nothing happened to them. They usually bleed out from the inside from a torn blood vessel in the heart which is pretty much instant death.
Ow, my spleen.
Oof ow
His hips were probably in his chest!
And probably has four eyeballs now.
Yeah, his testicles too.

Well the jump was a partial success - and he can probably sing soprano now.
I think you sent 'er a lil too hard there bud
All gas no brakes
He's spare parts. Now he has spare parts, too.
Pert near put her into the rhubarb.
Even the Dog's like WTF man.
"holy shit!"
It looks like anything that would fit was crammed under that ramp
Did I spot a Coleman cooler?
And this is why you should learn math/physics (or hire someone who did) before trying something this stupid. If he'd gone the right speed, it just might've worked (assuming the landing ramp was sturdy enough, which it probably wasn't lol).

the bike is different, sure. and the ramp material is different? but jumping is jumping man it’s pretty much a shitty freestyle ramp
Love how you're being downvoted because none of these people have jumped bikes before... You don't fuckin paper math the shit unless you're doing evel knievel shit
So are you saying some paper math *wouldn't* have helped the idiot who clearly didn't have a feel for how fast he should hit his jump?
No suspension travel, no worries mate it will fine. Haha. Well now he will be a few mm shorter.
Technically need zero suspension travel if the landing ramp angle is perfect. That’s not what happened here.
It might be perfect bro we don’t know bc he didn’t use it
That’ll buff out. And the bike might be okay too.
Anyone surprised his name is Tyler?
Kyle was a possibility.
Awesome haha
Didn't think he'd get that much air before watching it lmfao
Agreed! My thought was oops, over built that ramp a bit haha.
Also quite impressive how the ramp managed to hold up too. It looks to be held up by a log, some sort of box, planks of wood, and a fucking ladder 🤣

as a motocross guy, i really want to buy a sportster now and send it, just gotta grease every landing

gawd yall two fucking go on a date already
Watching this just after watching Forrest Gump. "Momma always said, stupid is what stupid does"
I like how he’s walking back like his shift at work just ended… “honey I’m home, what’s for dinner?”
The dog embodies my reaction perfectly.
Nurse"Doctor! It's his rectum" Doctor "Rectum? Damn near killed him!" All dumb jokes aside he land it 🤣👍
The ramp they made literally has a step ladder partially holding it up. I'm sorry but at this point it's just natural selection.
I can’t criticize the ramp construction. It held up fine. It’s just everything else about how this was thought out and executed that was wrong
I can't imagine the landing ramp would have stayed up with 700lbs crashing into it though. This was probably the best outcome he could have hoped for - walking away.

Shoulda gone on a dirt bike
My name is Rod and I like to party
Hahaha was scrolling looking for this comment. Glad I wasn't disappointed
I’m willing to bet they didn’t do the math.
Next time try math first.
Dude respawn right where he died
If you can’t do the math to figure out where the ramp is going to send you, don’t jump
This reminds me of the opening scene of Hotrod
Nothing I expect to happen happened
I couldn't stop laughing when I saw the second ramp. That's something 12 year olds would do. I mean, the gap is barely big enough for a bicycle run.
Couldn’t be bothered to pick up the bike.
Haahha he's in shock. But yeah boss move. Hahahahahah
Thank you for your sacrifice! Made my day.
Dog was like can I eat bike now?
San Diego homie
This the homie from Oceanside
This is such a Tyler thing to do.
Even the dog was like “damn! hope he’s alright.” 😂
Missed it by THAT much
How did no one think this was a bad idea?
“Where should we try this absolutely terrible idea?” “How about in the middle of the road?” “Genius”
Those ramps look like they're straight out of the Ed, Ed n Eddy cartoon.
Brain: small Balls: big
> Brain: small > > > > Balls: ~~big~~ exploded FTFY
I want a video of the aftermath, lemme see that bike !
Sent it a bit to hard there mate
And this is why ramp positions aren't estimated, but calculated..... Nice moves there mr. Not Quite Knievel

Flight1915 on Instagram. Seems like a fucking sick dude.
>Flight1915 I guess his username is fitting considering how much fucking air he got lmfao
If you don't like this, I don't like you lol
Sorry, what? I'm not sure if I'm reading it wrong, but what do you mean?
I was just saying if you don't like this clip, I don't like you. I wasn't talking about you or anything, just a general statement.
Why was it in response to my comment, then? 😂
Cause he got hella air like you said and I just said it there. Not much more too it, lol.
This made me smile
Became an overnight sensation with this one.
Question: This appears to be a public street…is this super illegal?
Prolly just a smidge illegal. Like jaywalking.
Technically yes but should it be since there’s no victim?
Full send…in the worst way!
He took less shock than ht stock bike
The fact that his reaction was “YEAH TYLER!” makes this video 10x better
sick lol
Just gonna send it, gonna be a good day.
Well too bad his spine most likely fared no better than his suspension.
@ 0:22 Dog: Did that really happen? Damn, human!
Guys got some fucking cajones
His nuts???
I seen this before. It was some guy saying he was Evil Knievel's, test-rider's son or some shit like that lol
Two thirds went perfect. One third, oops.... so close.
Full fucking senddddd
Tell me you're not a civil engineer without telling me...
When you try to engineer without doing any calculations
What a dumbass!
Do it again! That would be me.
See folks, this is what weapons grade stupid looks like.
Stunt bike Snizzzzzzzz!
What song belongs here? With arms wide open
Wtf…
I would probably take the time to do the math and figure out my velocity allowance so exactly that doesn't happen
Just gonna send it!
We just gonna pass on that Yeah Tyler ending.
People always forget that people with physics degrees worked with Evel Knieval
Fuck, even the dog knew it was bad.
Some super Dave Osborne shit right there, look him up if you font get it
How the fuck did he get that helmet off so quick?!
Need a sub for just plain stupid driver/rider.
I've never seen shocks literally explode before.
Just gonna super moto my cruiser…
Hope Tyler was wearing a cup
what bike is it?
Shocks from other bikes blow up just from second hand jumps like this lol
RIP his nuts
I'm impressed that the rider literally walked away from it. But yeah, too bad about the bike. Something was off in the speed calculations there.
