Is it just me? Or are there other areas all of this energy and time could be spent to make a real difference?

I grew up in Cameron Park. They should find some non-racist with the last name Cameron to rename it after. Problem solved. I find it strange that SO MUCH energy in that neighborhood has been devoted to this issue - almost as if people would rather debate this than take action to actually address racism….renaming a wealthy neighborhood doesn’t actually solve the systemic injustices that people of color face in this city and country.

Bingo. The symbolism is the easiest thing to change. It placates the criticizers, makes the people involved feel good, but unfortunately changes nothing of substance.

Then why did we tear down the statues? I don't care, just curious.

WhyOrangeMan

Sorry for the delay! To answer your question: There's a few reasons as far as I can tell. 1) Generally the people that care about those things (though not all of course) are easily appeased by meaningless actions. 2) It's a **VERY** simple "gesture" to show "progress", which the people in #1 care about. 3) Actual change is needed, but the majority of people in #1 and #2 don't need (or are effected by) that change, so removing a statue makes those people feel good about themselves while those with actual power laugh all the way to the bank, because it has almost, if not literal, **ZERO** impact on them. That is, make the people who are loud (and pretend to care) quiet, while also not doing anything substantial. Moving a statue to a museum (or to the trash or whatever) has a significant effect on the people that aren't actually harmed, while doing literally nothing for those who need help. The old adage if that the squeaky wheel gets the oil. In this case, the squeaky wheel is the spare tire.

Bob_Sconce

It's named after the entire family, right? Surely one of them wasn't racist.

If I was as house rich as people in that neighborhood, you could call the place whatever you want. Welcome to PooPoo PeePee Archipelago, my home value went up $200k in a year.

mondaywonderhands

Where did you come up with that name idea, BarfHurricane?

HeyBeFuckingNice

Hahahahahahahahahahhahahahaha

As someone that lives there: I’d prefer PooPoo Forest. Archipelago will be after more global warming. But for how long this has taken, it may be archipelago by the time we get there.
