The most amazing thing about her story is that she got stuck in Malaysia during the COVID lockdown. She was only there for an Olympic qualifying event when the government banned traveling and she ended up being stuck there for more than a year. I read she had to build her own workout equipments using water jugs.
And despite all that, her and her team were running online seminars at the same time in exchange for donations. They used the funds they raised to help get basic necessities like groceries to people back home in the Philippines who were having trouble during the lockdown.
Really awesome all around.

A video of her training from her Instagram. Crazy to think that she won gold today and beat the current WR-holder!!!
That right there makes the Philippine government look pathetic. She's an accomplished athlete in the world stage but she doesn't get any support because she's not a basketball player/boxer.
> That right there makes the Philippine government look pathetic.
They already are pathetic even before the Olympics began. They were very critical of her for asking for more financial support in the past. Now that she won gold despite the lack of support they're all "we believed in you all this time".
lol all those receipts are coming out now as every DDS now congratulates and tries to sweep under the rug that they attacked her for airing her grievances on the lack of government support.
Fuck, lifting sloshing water and sacks full of things like rice or powder is fucking hard. Shit sloshes and shifts so much you end up expending lots of energy on super minute stabilization.
[The government also tagged her as part of a conspiracy to oust Duterte](https://sports.inquirer.net/348734/olympic-medalist-hidilyn-diaz-shocked-over-inclusion-in-oust-duterte-matrix) which made her the target of attacks from the administrations supporters. Note this "ouster matrix" did not have any evidence backing it up.
Oh yeah. Our officials like to swallow public funds so a lot of thriving filipino athletes you see are either lucky/skilled enough to get a sponsor, or are part of thr upper middle class and above.
I did 8 years of taekwondo and I don't think any of our athletes ever got state sponsorship even though they were really good. To think that mcdonalds and milo sponsor our athletes more than the government does... shameful 🤡🤡🤡
Philippine officials go as far as to sell the athlete’s sponsored equipment so they can pocket the cash. Deplorable behaviour that exists to this day, and may have worsened since.
https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/sports/content/85344/philcycling-cancels-tour-due-to-corruption-issue/story/
That's very typical for third world countries. In Colombia we also have as similar situation, the government does shit for the athletes but when they win, everyone in the government is suddenly proud and offering presidential medals and "handshakes". It makes my blood boil.
Big congrats for Hidilyn Diaz, working against all odds.
You gotta throw a love triangle in there for good measure. Women don’t have any sort of physical conflict. Only conflict between other women going after the same man. (Heavy heavy sarcasm)
And in the beginning she is very shy and is wearing glasses, which means she is Hollywood-unattractive. The poor charming guy convinces her to take the glasses off. He makes her smile for the first time in the movie and we can suddenly all see that she is super pretty. She then suddenly becomes a “pretty little thing” that makes the rich guy invite her and her parents to his big house.
After a mixup and a misunderstanding she realises that the poor charming guy is the morally superior one of the two and chooses him. Finally it is revealed that the poor guy is in fact rich. Happy happy. Oh and she wins the medal after he convinces her to believe in herself.
But poor charming guy gets cancer and dies the night before seeing her lift 500 lbs to set a new record and win.

Better make it Emma Stone...
Probably the only reason Aloha tanked because she was supposed to be a hawaiian/japanese descendant. Man did they cast the wrong girl.
Maybe the local drug lord has a monopoly control of all the water jugs in the country because he uses them to mule drugs. So she has to fight and gain the respect of the drug lord in order to obtain the jugs
One day, she catches a child attempting to steal one of her jugs. Frustrated and enraged, she chases the child through the city streets and up several flights of stairs into his apartment. There she learns he was bringing water to his terminally ill mother.
Then, during the Olympics, the child and the mother are at home watching her succeed on TV with tears in their eyes. He picks up the water jug in the corner of the room. Credits roll.
Wait! You left out one of the most climactic parts, where after she exited the house with the child pondering what to do, she was confronted with 10 special agents of the Malaysian OSS. 10 years back in this lady’s life comes to haunt her. Will we find out what it is?
Nah nah, that's flashback that opens the sequel. Ten years on, she has recurring dreams of these men, but can never remember if they're real, and what exactly happened right after she left the house - before she found herself safe at home in part 1. Then as she's preparing pancakes for her overly cute twin daughters and husband who's too late for work to eat them, the doorbell rings.
It's the child! Who is no longer a child, but a man, and he now speaks perfect English.
My trainer is Filipino too! She is teaching me how to deadlift. She said that the president hates her so she is probably really awesome. Haha I hope he changes his mind now.
> in weightlifting
Thank you for putting the event. Wasn't in the title, and lots of people commenting didn't mention it either. The link wouldn't load (to spite me, I guess), and I spent a bizarre amount of time looking for info that seemed to be common knowledge to everyone else.
And set the Olympic record.
Edit: So many people responding to me have no idea how words work. Just because you beat the world record holder in A competition, does not mean you now have the world record. I have not looked into it but since the articles I've read specify she broke the Olympic Record, and not say she broke the World Record, I assume that the Silver medalist from this Olympics still holds the World Record. Just that she didn't meet her own personal record in this competition.
Yeah but was her coffee like, the perfect temperature when she took her first sip today? Mine was the absolute perfect temperature, so I’d say we are having pretty close to equally good days.
Working in IT and it's a quiet day with no servers down or people complaining.
Also having an equally good day minus the gold medal.
Hoy! Time to celebrate with karaoke, San Mig and lechon for everyone and their Titos on a day like this.
> Working in IT and it's a quiet day with no servers down or people complaining.
Im working in Shipping and Receiving. Order system is down and my coworker is on vacation. Also having an equally good day.
All jokes aside that’s a really positive outlook on life.
Like, your accomplishments may not look the same to the outside looking in, but to both you and her, they brought equal amounts of happiness to your days.
Idk why but I really needed to see this comment today, makes me feel like the little I’ve accomplished today is still enough.
>Diaz won gold in the 55-kilogram category of women's weightlifting — and in the process, she also set an Olympic record with her combined weight total of 224 kilograms **across two successful lifts**.
While Liao (Silver) lifted 223Kg
Why am I naked? Because it's too damned hot here! You people think every time you see a naked Nord barbarian, he's been tricked by some witch. So narrow minded. Now leave me alone.
“She took up weightlifting as a child, using plastic pipes that held concrete weights. When she was 11, the Filipina was given a barbell to train with after a local weightlifting competition, and she practiced so hard that she wore it out, breaking the bar from overuse,"
Absolute champion and well deserved! 🇵🇭🥇
Her victory also comes with roughly 600k USD cash prize mostly from private filipino corporations and a free house, but her victory is worth more than that. She wasn’t supported much by her government and had to ask for help from private individuals to help fund her journey.
Thanks MumbleRumble! It is really nice to see my home country win a gold metal in the Olympics! Even if it is just one, this is still an accomplishment for us Filipinos/Filipinas, and we are glad to share this to the world.
With zero support from the government, and when she spoke up against the lack of support athletes in the Philippines received, she was accused by Duterte of [being part of a conspiracy against him.](https://cnnphilippines.com/news/2019/5/9/hidilyn-diaz-oust-duterte-matrix.html)
Already happening here. I'm cringing from her harsh critics, due to the goverment's accusations, who are now "celebrating" her Olympic gold medal victory.
God they are. The supporters of the Duterte regime knows no shame.
After repeatedly attacking and lambasting her for daring to air her grievances regarding the lack of the support from the government, calling her "no-have-been" and that "she'll get nowhere", now these people are taking her win as a "sign" as she also won during the SONA of the president.
Really infuriating to see these people quietly delete their facebook post and gaslight the entire population of the Filipinos.
Good thing there are people who have screenshot receipts from the more vocal and infamous DDS.
I went with my dad to a billiards “club” when we were in the Philippines. It was an outdoor bar with 10 or so tables that were wet from the humidity. I was a teenager and there were kids younger than me drinking, smoking, and kicking our sorry asses all day.
He's cool. He's retired now. So he's doing retired people stuff. Waking up, eating breakfast, playing pool, fucking bitches, getting high and drunk, then getting hoes and fucking them again, then he sleeps. And do it all over again. Or maybe not, he's just chillin.
Kidding aside, he got apprehended recently for playing pool. Lmao.
https://www.rappler.com/sports/efren-bata-reyes-apprehended-playing-pool
Another wild thing about Reyes is that when he arrived to play in the United States, he played under an alias, Cesar Morales. This was because a lot of people in the states knew who Efren Reyes was, but no one knew what he looked like. He then proceeded to win about $80k in a month before revealing he was Reyes.
Imagine building a reputation playing pool overseas without anyone knowing what you look like.
If Skateboarding can become one, billiards can too. It's a sport you have to train to be good at, you can make it like boxing where the minute the athlete goes pro, can't compete for a medal.
And it would've been glorious. Having the rest of the non-billiards watching world not witness living legends like Efren Reyes and Django Bustamante crush it in billiards was a huge loss.
I just watched this, she was so happy when she won. Set a new Clean and Jerk olympic record as well. Also it's not easy to win against the Chinese weightlifters, they're extremely strong.
[So the Philippine President Duterte included her in a list of people that planned to oust him. Death threats and scaremongering are all included.](https://www.rappler.com/sports/hidilyn-diaz-fears-for-life-over-duterte-foe-list) Now that she won a medal a lot of this opportunistic parasite gonna be doing photo ops with her since election is near.
edit: Here is the complete story if anyone wishes to know what she went through.
[Long, bumpy road to milestone Olympic gold 'worth it' for Hidilyn Diaz.](https://news.abs-cbn.com/sports/07/26/21/long-bumpy-road-to-milestone-olympic-gold-worth-it-for-hidilyn-diaz)
A lot of them are anti-immigration too. Supported Trump when he was trying to end chain migration. These are people who have benefitted from chain migration.
They're looney in the fucking head.
Vietnamese immigrants/refugees too, as my family members will attest to--despite the US being overwhelmingly against bringing in Vietnamese refugees after the war ended.
My mom is one of the Filipinos who is not anti-immgration but she is anti-illegal immigration. She doesn’t think it’s fair that she and other immigrants had to work so hard to come into a new country legally to start a new life. Which tbh I can understand.
Are you not living in the Philippines by any chance? He has ridiculously high ratings with Filipinos abroad from what I remember—maybe because they support him all they like but they don’t have to bear the brunt of his policies.
Yes, most Pinoys here in the states supports Duterte but not all. Also the normalization of Marcos as a good president. Yeah he built some infrastructures but he still stole billions of dollars from the Filipinos and a dictator who suppressed dissenting oppositions. It's like Hitler did some good infrastructure but don't forget he's still a nazi and a war criminal,
Yes, he was Mayor of Davao for a very long time. He was and still is very popular there and is credited for transforming the city from a crime-infested dump to a utopia (if the words and views of his supporters are to be believed…).
I lived in a neighbouring city for a while and I can confirm that yes, whilst his strict measures helped to decrease crime stats I’m not sure it actually did anything to give more economic, educational and healthcare opportunities to the local population and improve their outcomes. All it did was mean that there was a strict curfew, people had fuck all to do in the evenings as you couldn’t really go out anywhere due to said curfew and he seemed to crack down hard on prostitution by criminalising and stigmatising it.
Trust me, they’re the vocal minority. Duterte was sworn in with 16 million votes, out of 50 million votes. If the Philippines were a two-party system like the USA, that means 34 million voters didn’t vote for him. He was never voted in by the majority.
He should get ousted by her. When he goes to take the picture she should grab him and throw him far, far away, out of the Philippines into the Pacific. Even if it doesn't happen like that literally, it's how they should tell the story.
I don't think Duterte can be re-elected since he took a 6 year term? This is what my Filipino bf told me at least. But i think one of his kids is being promoted as the next replacement.
To save himself from international criminal courts, he is running for vice president to cloak himself lol. And guess who's running for president? Oh, his daughter!
Yeah. One of his kid is going to run. Ironic coz this president hailed against nepotism from previous presidents and current politicians and yet they also practice nepotism.
It is very nice seeing my home country win gold medal in the Olympics, I can say that despite what Duterte thinks, she is the national hero along with Pacquiao. Thanks for the outpouring to love in his comment section!
How'd this lady manage it? The article says she took it up as a child (using, uh, sub-standard equipment) and also that she served in her nation's air force, which would have given her access to gyms, but not eight hours a day to train or whatever.
[Look at the absolutely dire state of this government-provided "gym"](https://twitter.com/diaz_hidilyn/status/951104806839439362) where she trained.
The tweet is basically her saying that the gym has had zero upgrades or changes from the time her coach started in 1990 until today.
I hate to say it, but Weightlifting suck balls in America, especially for the ladies.
I remember ABC or NBC did an article, but basically the black girl who was the US rep for the 08 Olympics in China was living on Social Security and welfare, and slept in a gym when she was homeless.
No corporate endorsement for her when she came back.
Face it, if you are a woman and you don't look good in a slim-suit or bikini in the west, you don't get money for winning Olympics in the west. (In China on other hands you might do for national pride)
And it isn't corporate evil men thing either...most women watch Olympics for the hot guys or agile based women sport like tennis or fencing, they don't want weightlifting.
> her nation's air force, which would have given her access to gyms
This is the Philippines we're talking about. Their air bases leave a lot to be desired when it comes to servicing aircraft, let alone have a gym with standard weightlifting equipment (I've seen makeshift ones where they have one steel rebar with 2 cement blocks on both ends).
Fun fact, Mayweather won a bronze at the only Olympics he competed in. Doesn’t count as a blemish against his undefeated record since the Olympics are considered an amateur boxing event.
EDIT: Should also mention he lost a round to Augie Sanchez during qualifications.
It’s also one of the most well known cases of a fighter getting robbed of gold at the Olympics up there with Roy jones jr in Seoul Korea in 88. who got fucked by the judges and the ref was even done for taking bribes.
Duterte Diehard Supporters (or DDS) are thanking their "father" for the gold medal on Facebook, simply because it happened during his presidency, and are trying to cover up the fact that Diaz was red-tagged because she criticized not having supported by the government, and are even trying to call her a hypocrite because she made a video of her with Duterte's aide, before she was added to the people who theya ccuse trying to oust him.
I just wanted my country to celebrate this but politics is really hammering our mental health here. Congratulations Hidilyn. This country owes you the stars for what you had to go through.
Thats because theres is no Olympic competition for karaoke. Im which case all other countries would simply send thier Philippine members to the competition.
I lived with an elderly Filipino lady who watched karaoke on the Filipino channel alll the time, you brought a smile to my face, she was a sweet lady. Thank you
Had to laugh hard at this. My relatives in the Philippines is so freakin poor. My mom here in the States, who gives quite generously to them all year long, bought them a very nice karaoke setup. Their house was the happening place in the neighborhood.
I visited some of my relatives in the Philippines for the first time a few years back. They weren't poor by local standards, but to me as an American...it's not what I'm used to.
Anyway, to celebrate this reunion -- my dad and uncles hadn't seen their cousins in the PH for like 40-50yrs -- my relatives rented this kickass karaoke setup. Like professional level with giant speakers on stands and everything. We were all up all night partying and singing karaoke loud as hell. Think we even bought out and drank all the beer in town.
Probably the most Filipino party I've ever attended. Good times.
Then you get to the rum.
Hahaha!
Anecdote: I took a vacay years ago to Boracay and a bucket of Red Horse in the AM was cheaper than water. So Red Horse it was. 10am and I had crispy pata and fucking beer. Good times.
Even Filipino men. I was drinking with my uncles once and then one of them brought out the karaoke. Three dudes in a basement, slowly getting drunk, singing karaoke. I honestly never expected that to happen.
Where did you see that? Countries usually pay their athletes for medals. Philippines isn’t known to support Olympic athletes so that would be pretty surprising that they paid so much.
For context, USA pays $37k per gold.
She previously criticized the government due to lack of support to athletes and even [received death threats](https://cnnphilippines.com/news/2019/5/9/hidilyn-diaz-oust-duterte-matrix.html).
But now, achieving this much is a huge boost for popularity here in the Philippines. For example, Manny Pacquiao now a senator and will probably run for president next election.
So to answer your question, yes. She is a hero to Filipinos. And I wouldn't be surprised if they start teaching about her in school.
...and this is how the olympics sneak up on you and get you engaged.
Because now I’m imagining all the little kids (the little girls especially) learning about the hard work and achievement of someone they can relate and now look up to, and it’s making me weirdly emotional.
Congrats to the Philippines!
This story is exactly why I love the Olympics. Sure, it's fun when my country wins a few - but it's the incredible human achievement and unimaginable joy their win brings to others that I keep coming back for.
There's definitely big problems with the Olympics (and sports in general) which need fixing, but there's good that needs to be saved.
I was also rooting for the philipino skater yesterday. She was all smiles absolutely loving it and being so supportive and friendly with other skaters. Hopefully she can for the next one
The most amazing thing about her story is that she got stuck in Malaysia during the COVID lockdown. She was only there for an Olympic qualifying event when the government banned traveling and she ended up being stuck there for more than a year. I read she had to build her own workout equipments using water jugs.

Far out, she did a Rocky IV montage in real life, for a year lol
https://www.instagram.com/p/CIU6M5bM2id/?utm_medium=copy_link A video of her training from her Instagram. Crazy to think that she won gold today and beat the current WR-holder!!!
That’s fucking heart and drive right there

In addition, she got red tagged as an alleged insurrectionist by the president's manufactured 'war' on terrorism
Despite being an active member of the armed forces herself!
This thread is crazy,
Yea if this woman ever writes a book that's a must read
lol all those receipts are coming out now as every DDS now congratulates and tries to sweep under the rug that they attacked her for airing her grievances on the lack of government support.
Well she's going to get it now for sure
Oh wow! That’s a movie waiting to be made.
Jeeze, this is some Rocky 4 stuff right there.
"PLEASE LOG IN TO HAVE EVEN BASIC VIEWING PRIVILEGES" Fuck off, Instagram.
Maybe that more difficult training helped her win!
This is what I’m thinking too haha. The “water jug” method might be the new training program in the future. 😅
Fuck, lifting sloshing water and sacks full of things like rice or powder is fucking hard. Shit sloshes and shifts so much you end up expending lots of energy on super minute stabilization.
She also didn’t get financial support from her own government. She won gold for her country on her own.
They are gonna be PISSED that it was a WOMAN that won the first gold.
Nah, they're going to claim credit for her win despite not providing enough support and threatening her life by being placed in that idiotic matrix.
Oh yeah. Our officials like to swallow public funds so a lot of thriving filipino athletes you see are either lucky/skilled enough to get a sponsor, or are part of thr upper middle class and above. Government should get no credit. This is her and her team’s achievement.

I would like to see a movie based around this but with added conflict for the sake of the narrative
There definitely wasn't any drama last year, you're right.
You gotta throw a love triangle in there for good measure. Women don’t have any sort of physical conflict. Only conflict between other women going after the same man. (Heavy heavy sarcasm)
Or, she has to decide between the funny, charming guy who's also slightly a bum, or the rich and successful douchebag.
And in the beginning she is very shy and is wearing glasses, which means she is Hollywood-unattractive. The poor charming guy convinces her to take the glasses off. He makes her smile for the first time in the movie and we can suddenly all see that she is super pretty. Gross. You're spot on, but it's still gross.
Don't forget the comic relief... an overweight clunky sidekick who eases tension at just the right moments!
But poor charming guy gets cancer and dies the night before seeing her lift 500 lbs to set a new record and win. Directed by M. Night Shamalamadingdong
"The End".... I'd see that movie in an IMAX!
But the charming guy volunteers at an animal shelter and is always chasing after mistreated dogs who love to eat ice cream cones
Yo describing most of Seth Rogen characters
And of course being Filipino, she'd be played by Scarlett Johansson
Better make it Emma Stone... Probably the only reason Aloha tanked because she was supposed to be a hawaiian/japanese descendant. Man did they cast the wrong girl.

Wow that’s awesome! It definitely paid off!! This is why I love the Olympics, for the great stories it has
She holds both Olympic medals the Phillipines has in weightlifting, with a silver in Rio.
That silver was the first medal won by a woman in the Philippines, according to the article!!! She's a history maker for sure
My trainer is Filipino too! She is teaching me how to deadlift. She said that the president hates her so she is probably really awesome. Haha I hope he changes his mind now.
Unlikely, Filipinos have too much pride to admit they're wrong. Source: Am Filipino by blood and I've never been wrong in my life 😜

I'd still accept that as a win.
Internet down at the provider level seems like it could be the best day for IT. Nobody can do anything or blame you for it.
If your Datacenter’s or big offices have just one internet provider with no failover I’ve got some bad news for you son.
Just roll out your emails requesting funding for the second source that got rejected.
Well shit. I guess I'll log a support ticket.

Annnnd you jinxed it

Wealth beyond measure, outlander.

That is absolutely insane. I can barely even deadlift half of that
That's a cool ass name.

How in the hell did she break a barbell?
Cheap bars definitely do
Cheap bars are commonly two pieces joined in the middle so whatever was holding them together probably just gave out.
Maybe from picking it up and dropping it so many times?
If you drop a power clean on a cheap bar I could see it breaking
I've seen some break when watching people do heavy stuff like deadlifts. Especially when the bar bends heavily a lot.
Her victory also comes with roughly 600k USD cash prize mostly from private filipino corporations and a free house, but her victory is worth more than that. She wasn’t supported much by her government and had to ask for help from private individuals to help fund her journey.

Communist that’s looking for private companies to sponsor her. What a government, just call her whatever fits their agenda

I could not root for this woman harder, I swear.
This is terrific. Congrats to the Phillippines!
If it's their first gold medal, I think this means this is the first time their national anthem has been played in a medal ceremony.
Thanks MumbleRumble! It is really nice to see my home country win a gold metal in the Olympics! Even if it is just one, this is still an accomplishment for us Filipinos/Filipinas, and we are glad to share this to the world.
Congrats buddy! This is really a monumental occasion for your country, and hopefully the first of many for future Filipino athletes.
Thank you so much!
If the government takes credit for her gold medal, I'd be seething with rage.
If billiards was in the Olympics they would have been crushing it for years lol
Haha indeed! My dad always brings this up every Olympics
I went with my dad to a billiards “club” when we were in the Philippines. It was an outdoor bar with 10 or so tables that were wet from the humidity. I was a teenager and there were kids younger than me drinking, smoking, and kicking our sorry asses all day.
This is the way
Well yeah they got the goat billiards player
The Philippines has one of the best pool players in the world iirc
Efren "Bata" Reyes
hows he doing by the way
So, I now have a new hero. Arrested for playing pool is so unbelievably rad.
The article makes it seem like it was for violating covid lockdown protocol. “Arrested for playing pool” would have been much cooler.
If names were an Olympic sport, Django Bustamante would be a multiple gold medalist.
I just watched this, she was so happy when she won. Set a new Clean and Jerk olympic record as well. Also it's not easy to win against the Chinese weightlifters, they're extremely strong.
Her joy is palpable! My eyes misted up when she realized she had done it. What a fierce accomplishment, this is spectacular form.
I wasn’t expecting to cry but I had a similar reaction! I felt her joyful screams in my heart. She deserves to be so proud!
Then I hope he gets ousted
Every sane person in this country does. Unfortunately his equally moronic daughter is aiming for presidency too.
Every Filipino person I’ve been close enough to talk politics with love him. I never understood
They're the Filipino version of MAGA or QAnon.
all my Filipino friends parents that married an American absolutely love Trump. It seems insanely common for them to lean conservative
A lot of them are anti-immigration too. Supported Trump when he was trying to end chain migration. These are people who have benefitted from chain migration. They're looney in the fucking head.
"Fuck you I got mine" mentality. Happens similarly with Cuban Americans in Florida.
Vietnamese immigrants/refugees too, as my family members will attest to--despite the US being overwhelmingly against bringing in Vietnamese refugees after the war ended.
its absolutely this, "fuck you I gots mines" is the best way I've seen it put
It's like Hitler did some good infrastructure but don't forget he's still a nazi and a war criminal,
My wife (who lived in Davao for ~14 years including ~4 years of Duterte's presidential term) has always been a staunch Duterte supporter.
Philippines president have a single six years term. He's not up to reelection.
But he also wants to run as vice president next election
Philippine presidents have a term limit of one 6-year term
There's getting impeached and removed from office, then there's getting physically thrown out of the palace, which she could probably do
awesome! congrats philippines!!🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
She gonna be a national hero when she gets back.
She already kinda was when she won silver in Rio.
It is very nice seeing my home country win gold medal in the Olympics, I can say that despite what Duterte thinks, she is the national hero along with Pacquiao. Thanks for the outpouring to love in his comment section!
My uncle literally burst into tears watching the event live. Our whole family is treating this like a holiday
Congrats Philippines! We love your country and people! Well deserved! ♥️ From Canada
Nice to see one of the underdog countries win for once.
The most "uplifting" story of the day.
Nah, read how she they treated her. Philippines didn't win shit, she did in spite of them
medals are team or individual accomplishments. The country who didn’t support them on their way to the top can eat shit lol
If Pacquiao hadn't immediately turned pro because his family was so poor, they could have gotten this out of the way in, like, 1996.
because Filipino Olympic athletes get absolutely zero help from the government you either go pro or find private support or starve
Holy shit, this woman is a hero. In America you have access to Planet Fitness for $10 a month. Hey, where our women at?
Planet fitness has no Oly equipment
I hate to say it, but Weightlifting suck balls in America, especially for the ladies. I remember ABC or NBC did an article, but basically the black girl who was the US rep for the 08 Olympics in China was living on Social Security and welfare, and slept in a gym when she was homeless. No corporate endorsement for her when she came back. Face it, if you are a woman and you don't look good in a slim-suit or bikini in the west, you don't get money for winning Olympics in the west. (In China on other hands you might do for national pride) And it isn't corporate evil men thing either...most women watch Olympics for the hot guys or agile based women sport like tennis or fencing, they don't want weightlifting.
> her nation's air force, which would have given her access to gyms This is the Philippines we're talking about. Their air bases leave a lot to be desired when it comes to servicing aircraft, let alone have a gym with standard weightlifting equipment (I've seen makeshift ones where they have one steel rebar with 2 cement blocks on both ends).
She trained in someone's backyard gazebo apparently Source: someone else's comment
That is fucking insane. I'd watch a movie about her.
Fun fact, Mayweather won a bronze at the only Olympics he competed in. Doesn’t count as a blemish against his undefeated record since the Olympics are considered an amateur boxing event. EDIT: Should also mention he lost a round to Augie Sanchez during qualifications.
I think it was actually bronze, and from what I vaguely remember, people called the judging corrupt. Which, y'know, boxing.
It’s also one of the most well known cases of a fighter getting robbed of gold at the Olympics up there with Roy jones jr in Seoul Korea in 88. who got fucked by the judges and the ref was even done for taking bribes.
Even if it counted, no reasonable boxing fan would have held it against him. It was a blatantly corrupt decision.
I think a judge actually quit in protest.

Yea that's why most of the winning countries are wealthy ones, the poor ones just don't have many people who can afford to train that much
Tigerbelly gonna be lit
She'll be written into Filipino lore
Duterte Diehard Supporters (or DDS) are thanking their "father" for the gold medal on Facebook, simply because it happened during his presidency, and are trying to cover up the fact that Diaz was red-tagged because she criticized not having supported by the government, and are even trying to call her a hypocrite because she made a video of her with Duterte's aide, before she was added to the people who theya ccuse trying to oust him. I just wanted my country to celebrate this but politics is really hammering our mental health here. Congratulations Hidilyn. This country owes you the stars for what you had to go through.
Guess hard work and never giving up does work. Congrats to the Philippines
Unlimited Halo Halo for everyone!
And she did it with brute Fuckin strength too. Well done!
Thats because theres is no Olympic competition for karaoke. Im which case all other countries would simply send thier Philippine members to the competition.
Or Karaoke fights. Philippines would have gold on points every time
If Karaoke fighting was a sport, playing Sinatra's My Way would be considered a PED for Filipinos lol
I lived with an elderly Filipino lady who watched karaoke on the Filipino channel alll the time, you brought a smile to my face, she was a sweet lady. Thank you
Everyone gangsta until Kuya Boy comes through with the Magic Mic and sisig
Good times.
Buying all the beer in town is such a balikbayan kind of thing to do. Hell yeah. Hahah
*groans with Red Horse headache*
Then you get to the rum. Hahaha! Anecdote: I took a vacay years ago to Boracay and a bucket of Red Horse in the AM was cheaper than water. So Red Horse it was. 10am and I had crispy pata and fucking beer. Good times.
It feels wrong to laugh at this, but anybody who knows Filipino girls knows this is true.
Even Filipino men. I was drinking with my uncles once and then one of them brought out the karaoke. Three dudes in a basement, slowly getting drunk, singing karaoke. I honestly never expected that to happen.
Until team Nigeria or Slovakia or whoever sings My Way and they have to permanently cancel the event
She just got $585,000 for that gold, good for her.
Where did you see that? Countries usually pay their athletes for medals. Philippines isn’t known to support Olympic athletes so that would be pretty surprising that they paid so much. For context, USA pays $37k per gold.
Can anyone from the Philippines comment, is she a national hero there?
Congrats to my brothers and sisters in the Philippines 🇵🇭 🥇
This story is exactly why I love the Olympics. Sure, it's fun when my country wins a few - but it's the incredible human achievement and unimaginable joy their win brings to others that I keep coming back for. There's definitely big problems with the Olympics (and sports in general) which need fixing, but there's good that needs to be saved.
Just watched the video, I'm so happy for her.
I was also rooting for the philipino skater yesterday. She was all smiles absolutely loving it and being so supportive and friendly with other skaters. Hopefully she can for the next one
First Olympic story to make me really smile so far in 2020.
And the government didn't even help her. In fact, they gave her d-word threats for giving a nuanced criticism of how the government didn't help her.
Duck threats?
How weird, the comment is locked. Guess she meant "death threats" not sure why "d-word" needs to be used. Maybe because it got locked?
Mods? WTF, please.
Yeah, I feel like the phrase to block here “I’m going to kill you” not “death threats”.
This person isn't even advocating for death threats, just saying someone received death threats.
